Capt. John W. Maloney died on June 16, 2005, when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device while leading his team out of an ambush south of Ramadi. Assigned to Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton, California, Maloney assumed command in July 2004. Maloney became the first Marine in the award’s 27-year history to receive the prestigious Leftwich Trophy for Outstanding Leadership posthumously. He was also awarded the Bronze Star with combat “V” for his heroism. Maloney is survived by his wife, Michelle.
