About This Competition

How can one competition do the following?

1. Give back to the local veteran community.
2. Be so accessible that even our Parkinson’s class members can compete.
3. Allow athletes to complete as many or as few workouts as they desire, in any order.
4. Help you find out exactly what area you can work on to improve your health and fitness. Are you lacking strength, power, endurance, or agility? You’ll know after the Gilroy Unity Games!

**EVENT 1 TESTS:** Cardiorespiratory endurance, stamina, muscular endurance, and flexibility.
**EVENT 2 TESTS:** Strength, power, speed, and recoverability.
**EVENT 3 TESTS:** Coordination, agility, accuracy, balance, and cardiorespiratory endurance.

In CrossFit, we strive to balance athletes across all 10 general physical skills:
1. Cardiorespiratory endurance
2. Stamina
3. Flexibility
4. Strength
5. Speed
6. Power
7. Accuracy
8. Agility
9. Balance
10. Coordination

By doing just three workouts, you will know exactly which of the 10 areas you should focus on going forward to reap the full rewards of CrossFit. So why not do it right and with the most focus you can?

**BUT WAIT… THERE’S MORE!!!**

**YOU DON’T HAVE TO DO THE ENTIRE COMPETITION!** That’s right, I’ll say it again: **YOU DON’T HAVE TO DO THE ENTIRE COMPETITION!!!** In fact, we have a goal to get as many people as possible to do the first event “CHAD,” with all proceeds from “CHAD” going directly to our local Veterans of Foreign Wars building (VFW) in downtown Gilroy. This helps support workshops, meetings, and a place where veterans who have been through the traumas of war can connect with like-minded people.

So whether you want to sign up to find out where your health and fitness stand or you want to give to the cause and do the workout “CHAD,” it’s a win-win!

**AS IF IT COULDN’T GET ANY BETTER… IT DOES!**

You’ll notice there are no weights or heights associated with the workouts. That’s because every workout will be scored using the following equation:

**FORCE X DISTANCE X REPS / TIME = POWER**

For example: I weigh 185 lbs with clothes on. I carry a 40 lb ruck sack during the workout “CHAD”. I choose a 20” box to step up and down on, and it takes me 45:08 to complete by myself. My score would be calculated using this equation:

**FORCE = 225 lbs X DISTANCE (20”) X 1,000 REPETITIONS / 45.08 = 99,823 Points**

**EVENT 2: “STRONG”**
**FORCE = Weight of sled + weight on sled X DISTANCE / 1 Minute = SCORE**
For example: The sled weighs 87 lbs empty and I put 180 lbs on top (4 X 45 lb plates). I’m able to do 5 X 25’ passes in 1 minute.

**FORCE = 267 lbs X DISTANCE (125’) / 1 Minute = 33,375 Points**

You will pick the weight you put on the sled, the farmer’s carry, and the size of the sandbag/DBall you use to lift to the platform, as well as the height of the platform. All go into the power equation.

The Gilroy Unity Games is unique in our goal of bringing together the veteran and LGBTQ+ communities while giving back and donating to the local veterans who need it most. It’s also a productive competition that helps you improve your health and fitness by identifying which of the 10 areas of fitness you should focus on until next year’s competition.

Testing and retesting are core principles in CrossFit. The Gilroy Unity Games will test not just your fitness, but the state of our town and how accepting, loving, kind, and hardworking we really are!

So let’s see it, Gilroy! Let’s show the world we are #GILROYSTRONG by coming together to push our personal limits and build a tighter community where everyone is accepted for their hard work, kindness, and dedication to excellence in everything we do.
