About This Competition

Ko te reo kia rauora, ko te tīnana kia hauora. 

Ko te pūtake o Mātātoa he hao mai i te hunga kirikawa ki te naka whiti, me te hunga mumu reo, ka whakakotahi ki raro i te kaupapa kotahi.

Mātātoa is a kaupapa Māori driven competition that aims to bridge the gap between the world of fitness and te ao Maori. 

Open to all ages, cultures and abilities we welcome and embrace all peoples!

Workouts

WOD 1 "TE PAPANUI"

FORMAT:

Heavy Barbell Complex (ladder)

Complex - 1 Clean + 1 Front Squat + 1 Hang Clean

TIME FORMAT:

60 seconds to lift per platform, per pair.

15 seconds to transition to the next platform

8 platforms total (1 barbell per weight)

MOVEMENT STANDARDS:

Clean = Bar starts on the floor. Any style of clean is allowed (muscle, power, squat)

Front Squat = Must start from the front rack position. Hip creases must clearly pass below the top of the knees. Athlete must go below parallel for the lift to count.

Hang Clean = Must start from above the knees (hang position). Any style of clean is allowed (muscle, power, squat).

The complex must be completed unbroken by each athlete. If the bar is dropped before completing all three movements, the attempt is a "no lift" for that platform. Collars must be secured on the bar at all times.

SCORING & TIE BREAK:

Score = Heaviest combined complex weight successfully lifted by the team. 

Tie Break = If multiple teams complete the same max lift, the split time at which the team completed their last successful lift together will determine the higher placing.

WOD 2 "TE TOONUITANGA"

 

VARIATIONS:

TAUTŌHITO - RX

SANDBAG = 68kg (T) 45kg (W)

HSW = 36m (6m increments unbroken)

 

TAUWAENGA/TAIPAKEKE - INT/MAS

SANDBAG = 45kg (T) 34kg (W)

HSW = 24m (no minimum requirement)

 

TAUHOU/TAIOHI - BEG/TEENS

SANDBAG = 34kg (M) DUMBELL 15kg (W) goblet squat/DB clean

HSW = 60m Bearcrawl

 

NOTES:

Squats can be performed in any way (bear hug/shoulder) so long as range of motion is achieved.

 

WOD 3 "RAUPATU"

 

WEIGHTS:

TAUTŌHITO/RX: 60kg/40kg

TAUWAENGA/INT: 50kg/35kg

TAIPAKEKE/MAS: 50kg/35kg

TAUHOU/BEG: 40kg/30kg

TAIOHI/TEEN: 40kg/30kg

WOD 4 - "KA ORA TONU"

Workout flow:

5 x 3 minute rounds - until failure or 15min total.

BUY IN:

SYNC Burpee over dumbbell

SYNC Dumbbell snatch

INTO

C2 bike cals in time remaining.

Round 1 = 16 cals

Round 2 = 22 cals

Round 3 = 28 cals

Round 4 = 34 cals

Round 5 = Max effort cals
