Workouts

98 Games Event 1 - presented by Rec Gen, is Strength:

For maximum total team load across three lifts. A running clock starts at 0:00 and ends at 18:00.

Across three windows, athletes will work to establish max lifts in the front squat, bench press, and weighted pull-up.

0:00 - 7:00 all four athletes establish a three-rep max front squat.
7:00-13:00 all four athletes establish a two-rep max bench press.
13:00 - 18:00 all four athletes establish a one-rep max weighted pull-up.

Your teams score is the combined total of each athletes heaviest successful lifts.

Event Flow:

Teams will begin with five minutes of warm-up time on the competition floor.
During this time, teams can set their j-hooks and build to their first opening attempts.
Teams are allowed to have the bar pre-loaded and ready to go before the clock starts.

Athletes may lift in any order, rotating freely with whoever is ready.
However, only one athlete may lift at a time.
Each athlete is allowed a maximum of three attempts per lift.

For the Front Squats and Bench Press, male and mixed teams will use a 20-kilogram barbell.
Female teams will use a 15-kilogram barbell.

If an athlete begins their lift before time runs out, they may finish their attempt, even if the clock expires.

For the Bench Press, one spotter is mandatory at all times.
Any early contact or assistance from the spotter will result in a no rep.

Teammates may assist in loading and unloading barbells but must remain in their designated safety boxes during lifts.
Teammates may also assist in loading dip belts and helping each other prepare for attempts.

Non-lifting teammates must remain in their designated safety boxes at all times.

Clips are mandatory on all barbells for any reps to count.

Two dip belts are provided for the weighted pull-ups to allow faster transitions between athletes.

Each team will have the following equipment provided:

2 x 20kg barbells
2 x 15kg barbells
Plates: 6 x 20kg, 4 x 10kg, 4 x 5kg, 4 x 2.5kg, 4 x 1kg
4 clips
2 dip belts
Teams are responsible for loading their own bars and must confirm the weights with the judge before each attempt.

At the conclusion of the event, teams will have two minutes to pack away equipment and load their barbells to the correct weight, ready for the next event. This window is from minute 18:00 to 20:00.

Movement Standards:

Front Squat:

The barbell must be in the front-rack position, resting on the shoulders.
Any grip is permitted, including arms crossed.
The athlete must start each rep standing tall, with hips and knees fully extended.
The athlete descends until the hip crease is clearly below the top of the knee.
The rep is complete when the athlete returns to full extension at the top.
Judges will confirm depth and lockout for each successful attempt.

Bench Press:
The athlete must lie flat on the bench with shoulders and feet in contact with the ground at all times.
The bar starts at full arm extension, directly over the chest.
The bar must be lowered to make clear contact with the chest.
The press must be completed to full elbow extension with control.
Only the lifter may complete the lift — any early assistance from the spotter is a no rep.
If the bar is re-racked, the athlete must restart the attempt from zero.
A successful rep ends with the bar fully locked out and motionless.
Judges will confirm chest contact and full lockout for each attempt.

Weighted Strict Pull-Up (no kipping allowed):
Each rep starts from a dead hang, with arms fully extended and feet off the ground.
Any grip is allowed — pronated, supinated, or mixed.
No gymnastics grips allowed. Chalk will be provided for each team.
The athlete must use a dip belt with hanging load — no other loading method is allowed.
A bodyweight Strict Pull-Up is worth one kilogram. Any additional weight on the dip belt is added to calculate the total load per rep.
The chin must clearly pass above the horizontal plane of the bar at the top of each rep.
The rep is complete when the athlete returns to a full dead hang under control.
Only one athlete per team may attempt reps on the rig at a time.
Two dip belts are provided per team to allow fast transitions during the 5-minute window.
Judges will confirm full extension at the bottom, no kipping to gain advantage on the way up and chin-over-bar at the top for each rep to count.

98 Games Event 2, Presented by LiveFit Nutrition, is Performance:

A 6-minute AMRAP, performed in pairs:
Facing each other teams will work through:

12 Synchro Deadlifts
9 Synchro Hang Power Cleans
6 Synchro Shoulder To Overhead

Two athletes work while two rest, rotating as needed.
Your team’s score is the total number of reps completed in the 6-minute window.

EVENT FLOW:

At the 20:00 mark, a 6-minute clock begins.
All teams start with their backs to their barbells, facing away.
In pairs, athletes will complete:
12 Synchro Deadlifts
9 Synchro Hang Power Cleans
6 Synchro Shoulder To Overhead
All reps must be performed in synchronisation - judged at the top of each rep.
Teams can rotate athletes at any time - no fixed order or set pairings. Mixed teams must always work in male/female pairs, following the same rotation rules.
The bar must return to the ground safely before the next pair rotate in.
Clips are mandatory on all barbells.
Non-working athletes must remain in their designated safety boxes at all times.
Each team will have one judge to track completed reps and enforce synchro standards.

In the case of a tied score between two competing teams, the tiebreak will be the fastest time to have completed two rounds of the barbell complex. Faster is better.

DIVISION WEIGHTS:

Rookie Teams: Dual Kettlebells @16kg/8kg
Intermediate Teams: Barbell @50kg/30kg
Elite Teams: Barbell @70kg/47kg

After the event, teams will have a 10-minute transition window to reset their lane to its original condition and move to the next arena.

MOVEMENT STANDARDS:

Deadlift

Both athletes lift simultaneously to full extension — hips and knees locked out, shoulders behind the bar at the top.
Rep is scored at the top when both athletes have reached full extension.
Any grip is allowed. Lifting straps or grips are not permitted.
Only conventional deadlifts allowed (sumo deadlift is not allowed).
No intentional bouncing to gain an advantage.

Hang Power Clean

Rep starts from the hang at full extension at the top of the deadlift. No reps from the ground.
Bar is cleaned to the shoulders in one motion without a full squat.
Elbows must finish in front of the bar, with hips and knees fully extended.
Rep is scored once both athletes reach full extension at the top.
Athletes must stand tall before moving to Shoulder-to-Overhead. Hinging or bouncing the bar off the quads is allowed.

Shoulder To Overhead

Athletes may use a strict press, push press, push jerk, or split jerk - as long as both athletes reach full extension simultaneously at the top of the rep.
The rep is complete when the bar is locked out overhead with full extension of hips, knees, and elbows, and feet in line.
Both athletes must hold full extension together for the rep to count.
Pairs may wait for each other at the top before lowering the bar for next rep.

Dual Kettlebell Variation (*Rookie teams only)

Each athlete uses two kettlebells. Males @16kg. Females @8kg.
Movement standards are the same as the barbell above - full lockout at the top for each rep to count.
Synchronisation is judged at the top of every rep.

98 Games Events 3 and 4, presented by Concept 2 and Pillar Performance, are Capacity and Groundwork.

This is a 25-minute EMOM.
Your team will rotate every minute through the following five stations:

Max Cal Row
Max Cal Ski Erg
Max Cal Bike Erg
Max Reps Parallette-Facing Burpees
Rest

Events 3 and 4 are scored separately, but performed at the same time.

Event 3: Capacity – Total calories accumulated across the Row, Ski, and Bike Erg.

Event 4: Groundwork – Total reps accumulated of Parallette-Facing Burpees completed by your team.

EVENT FLOW

At the 36:00 mark, a 25-minute clock begins.

All four athletes start together — one athlete per station.
Every minute, the team rotates to the next station, following the same order for the full 25 minutes:
Max Cal Row
Max Cal Ski Erg
Max Cal Bike Erg
Max Reps Parallette-Facing Burpees
Rest
Athletes will complete 5 full rounds at each station across the workout.
Early rotation is allowed, but no athlete may begin work until the next minute starts.
Drag factor may be adjusted once before starting each turn.
All work must be performed within the 60-second window.
The assigned rest zone will be behind the rower.
Your team will need to push hard on both the machines and the burpees - with two separate scores on the line, every Calorie and every rep counts.

In the case of a tied score between two competing teams, the tiebreak will be the calories accumulated on the RowErg across the 25 minutes. More is better.

MOVEMENT STANDARDS

Concept 2 Machines (Row, Ski, Bike Erg)

Athletes may not start work until their allocated minute begins.
Athletes may not touch or reset the monitor at any time.

Athletes must face the parallette, with hands and feet outside the centre tape line.
A two-foot takeoff is not required — but both feet must be in the air when clearing the parallette.
No part of the body may touch the parallette during the jump, or it will be a no rep.
The rep is complete when both feet land on the other side.

Elite: Two-foot takeoff and landing required; any contact with the box is a no rep
Intermediate: Two-foot takeoff required; athletes may step or jump down to the other side
Rookie: Step-overs allowed
Both feet must land on the floor on the opposite side of the box for the rep to count and for the next partner to begin

Sandbag Back Rack Walking Lunges (Synchro)

Lunges must alternate legs; each step counts only when the back knee touches the ground and athletes reach full hip and knee extension at the top
Athletes may either stand tall between reps or step through, provided full extension is reached
Each completed meter of the lunge counts as one rep toward the team’s total

98 Games Event 6, presented by Sydney Swans, is The Final.

Starting at the 86:00 mark, teams will race for time:
All athletes: 30m sprint together
Then 2 rounds of:
30m Carry + 30m Sprint per athlete
Then as a team: Echo Bike calories (division-specific)
Then all athletes: Final 30m sprint to the finish line
Teams will have 12 minutes to complete the event.
This is the final test.
Leave it all on the floor.

EVENT FLOW

Teams of 4 begin standing behind the start line.
At the 86:00 mark, all 4 athletes complete a 30m sprint together.
Then, complete 2 rounds, one athlete at a time, in the following sequence:

Athlete 1: 30m Carry → 30m Sprint
Athlete 2: 30m Carry → 30m Sprint
Athlete 3: 30m Sprint → 30m Carry
Athlete 4: 30m Sprint → 30m Carry
Once all 4 athletes have completed their individual carries, the team moves to the Echo Bike.
As a team, accumulate the required number of calories based on your division.
Athletes may tag in and out in any order.
Once the calorie target is hit, all 4 athletes complete a final 30m sprint together to the finish line.
The event is complete when all 4 athletes have fully crossed the finish line.
Time cap is 12 minutes.
Your team’s score is the total time taken to complete the event.

Additional Notes:
Each athlete completes one carry per round (2 total per athlete across the event).
Teams decide which athlete carries which object, and in what order.
Athlete order may change between rounds.

If teams do not finish within the timecap the teams score will be: score = time cap + reps accumulated. (30m carry = 1 rep, 30m sprint = 1 rep. Calories as normal). Note: Athletes must fully cross the line for carry/sprint reps to count.

In the case of a tied score between two competing teams, the tiebreak will be the time taken to complete Round 1. Faster is better.

MOVEMENT STANDARDS

Carries

All athletes must complete the full 30-meter carry. If the implement is dropped, they can restart from where they dropped it and must finish the full distance before the next teammate begins.
