Kahumaiwhiti Rangatahi Functional Fitness Competition
Presented by: Ngā Kura Kaupapa Māori o Kahungunu (NKKM o Kahungunu)
In partnership with: Te Kapa Haka o Kahungunu & Outkast Events

About the Event
Kahumaiwhiti Rangatahi is a one-day functional fitness competition designed specifically for ākonga from Kura Kaupapa Māori. Delivered under the guiding principles of Te Aho Matua, this kaupapa celebrates hauora, strength, unity, and te reo Māori, while fostering whakawhanaungatanga between kura across the region.
This event aims to uplift rangatahi through positive challenge and teamwork, and acts as a stepping stone as we prepare for Wiki Hā 2026.
Competition Structure
👫 Teams:
Same-sex pairs (Male/Male & Female/Female)
🎓 Divisions:
Year 7–8
Year 9–10
Year 11–13
📋 Qualifying Criteria:
- Both team members must be currently enrolled at the same Kura Kaupapa Māori.
- Teams may move up into an older division, but not down into a younger one.
- This competition is exclusive to ākonga in kura Aho Matua – no mainstream participation permitted.

Registrations Open: 3:00pm, 25th July 2025
Registrations Close: 3:00pm, 15th August 2025
Workout Release: 3:00pm, 22nd August 2025
Event Day: 30th August 2025 (8:00am – 1:00pm)
Registration Policy
📝 All registrations must be submitted by kura staff only – such as a teacher in charge or kaiako responsible for sport/PE/events.
✅ ALL participants and/or their whānau must complete the event waiver in order to be eligible to compete.
👕 Each participant will receive a competition athlete tee as part of their registration. Please note: shirt sizes cannot be changed after registration, even if a substitute is entered.

- A 5-week training programme delivered to the teacher in charge of each registered kura
- An athlete tee for each participant
- A full day of positive challenge and whakawhanaungatanga

🔁 Refund Policy:
No refunds will be given once payment is made.
🔄 Substitute Policy:
Substitutes are permitted, but shirt sizes are locked in after registration.
👨👧 Can my child who attends a mainstream school participate with a kura student?
No. This kaupapa is strictly for ākonga of kura Aho Matua. This is a space built for kura communities as we prepare for Wiki Hā 2026.
📦 What if a team pulls out after the close date?
The spot will not be refunded however it may be transferred. Please ensure your team is committed before registering.

Rerenga o te Wero
Hei te karanga “Timata”
Ka tiki a Hoa E i te Pōro, ā, ka pupuri ki te tūnga āwhi i te taumata uma.
Ka mahi a Hoa A i:
21 Whiu Pēpere (Russian Kettlebell Swings)
21 Piurua (Double Unders, ā, mēnā ka hiahiatia ka whakamahi i te kōwhiringa whakarite mō te reanga pakeke).
Whakawhiti tūranga
Ka tiki a Hoa A i te Pōro Pakitara, ka pupuri hoki.
Ka mahi a Hoa E i te 21 Whiu Pēpere + 21 Piurua.
Rauna tuarua (15 ia nekehanga)
Whakahaerehia anō te tukurua whakawhiti me te 15 o ia nekehanga.
Rauna whakamutunga (9 ia nekehanga)

Ture Pōro

Workout Flow
On “Go”
Hoa E picks up the Wall Ball and holds it in a bear hug position at chest height.
Hoa A performs:
21 Whiu Pēpere (Russian Kettlebell Swings)
21 Piurua (Double Unders or scaling option for age group)
Switch roles
Hoa A picks up the Wall Ball and holds it.
Hoa E performs the same 21 Whiu Pēpere + 21 Piurua.
Next round (15 reps each)
Repeat the same switching sequence with 15 reps of each movement
Final round (9 reps each)
Repeat the same sequence with 9 reps of each movement.
Wall Ball Rule
The Wall Ball must be held in the bear hug position before the working partner can start their reps.
If the Wall Ball is dropped, no reps can be performed until it is picked back up.
Scoring
For Time (fastest team to complete all required work).
Time Cap: 12 minutes

Air Squat: me heke ngātahi te hope ki raro iho i ngā turi, ā, me tū ngātahi ki runga kia tū tika.
Pull Up: me eke ngātahi ngā kauae ki runga ake i te pae (māna, kia oti te paerewa kua whakaritea).
Te rere o te wero
Ka oti te rauna tuatahi (3–3–3), ka piki ake ngā nekehanga ki te +3 i ia nekehanga mō ia rauna:Rauna 2 = 6–6–6
Rauna 3 = 9–9–9
Rauna 4 = 12–12–12

Ngā Ture
Paerewa Tukutahi: Ka kore e tatau he nekehanga kia tika rā anō te tutukinga a te tokorua i te paerewa hei te wā kotahi.

Tatauranga
Tātau mutunga = te katoa o ngā nekehanga i oti i roto i te 10 meneti.
Ka tatau ngā wāhanga o ngā rauna (ka tāpirihia ngā nekehanga katoa, kaua ko ngā rauna i oti anake).
On “Go”
Both athletes begin with:
3 Nohotū Tūtahi (Sync Sit Ups)
3 Noho Hītengi Tūtahi (Sync Air Squats)
3 Tōrunga Tūtahi (Sync Pull Ups / scaling option per age group)
Athletes must perform each rep in unison.
Sit Up: both athletes’ shoulders touch the ground at the same time and sit tall together at the top.
Air Squat: both athletes reach full depth together (hip crease below knee) and stand tall at the same time.
Pull Up: both athletes’ chins clear the bar at the same time (or scaling option reaches standard).
Progression
At the completion of the first round (3–3–3), reps increase by +3 per movement each round:
Round 2 = 6–6–6
Round 3 = 9–9–9
Round 4 = 12–12–12
Continue adding +3 reps until 10min time cap.
Rules
Sync Standard: No rep counts unless both athletes hit the standard together.
If one athlete finishes early, they must wait until their partner

Kia tere tutuki (ko wai ka tere rawa te whakaoti).
